Most product packaging carries a barcode that does one thing: hold a number. The GS1 Digital Link standard changes that. How does the GS1 Digital Link URI work?

A GS1 Digital Link URI puts the product identifier into a web address using GS1 Application Identifiers. The GTIN sits after Application Identifier 01. As of version 1.4.0 of the standard, the GTIN is written as 14 digits. A code reader can extract the identifier straight from this structure, with no internet connection required.

A basic example looks like this: id.yourbrand.com/01/09312345678907. The path holds the Application Identifier (01) and the 14-digit GTIN. Qualifiers such as a batch or lot number and a serial number can be added in the same path, and attributes like expiry date can follow.
